How Backups Work
Backups exist so the website can be recovered if something catastrophic goes wrong.
What Backups Usually Protect
- Website content.
- CMS data.
- Uploaded files.
- Configuration needed to restore the site.
Important Clarification
Backups are a disaster-recovery safety net, not a day-to-day editing workflow.
That means:
- they are there to help restore the website if the site is damaged, broken, or otherwise needs to be recovered;
- they are not intended as a version history for routine customer edits;
- and they are not meant as a self-service way to recover deleted pages, deleted blocks, or overwritten content.
Deleted Content
Recovery of deleted pages or other deleted customer content may sometimes be possible, but it is handled separately from disaster recovery.
If that kind of recovery is available, it is usually charged based on time and depends on your maintenance agreement.
If A Restore Is Ever Needed
The right recovery approach depends on what has happened. In some cases a full restore may be appropriate, but in others a more targeted fix may be better.
